GSL is a proudly 100% New Zealand privately owned company operating from our Head Office in Hornby, Christchurch for the past 27 years, providing Grounds Maintenance, Civil Construction and Landscaping services in and around Canterbury.
Our Civil Construction Team is growing its project repertoire and capacity having established a reputation for successfully delivered projects for earthworks, drainage, roading, sports fields and the construction of stormwater treatment facilities, waterway enhancements and drainage improvements.
Our Open Spaces division offers a diverse range of services including roadside mowing, chemical spraying, pest plant control, landscaping, mass native planting and hydro seeding, as well as high amenity sports turf maintenance. We provide traffic management for NZTA and local authority contracts and roading maintenance through NZTA’s NOC maintenance contracts.
Our Mechanical Workshop extensively supports all areas of the business and external clients with services including the repair and maintenance of our vehicles and machinery, welding, and fabrication.

The Opportunity
Due to an internal promotion, we are seeking a Junior Accountant to support our finance function with a strong focus on project costing, management accounting, and compliance in a dynamic and growing business.
Based in Christchurch and reporting to the Management Accountant, this role is ideal for an early career professional looking to gain hands-on experience and exposure across both financial and management accounting. You’ll help ensure the financial accuracy of projects while developing your accounting expertise in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.
This is a busy role so to be outstanding, you will be proactive and solution focused with an ability to work under pressure, managing your own time and resources to ensure deadlines are met.
What you’ll be doing:
Project Cost Controls
• Reconcile hours and costs from Daily Job Records (DJRs)
• Support time tracking and wage control processes in Nimbus ERP
• Assist in plant and equipment cost analysis and reporting
Financial Accounting
• Complete bank reconciliations, journals, and balance sheet reconciliations
• Support Accounts Receivable and credit control, ensuring timely project invoicing
• Assist in managing credit and supplier applications and debtor follow-ups
Management Accounting & Costing
• Support monthly job performance reviews and WIP analysis
• Assist with workshop financials and project performance reporting
• Compile and analyse monthly management accounts for the board
Compliance & Reporting
• Assist with PAYE, GST, and FBT reconciliations and filings
• Maintain accurate and compliant records for IRD purposes
What You'll Bring
• A tertiary qualification in Accounting, Finance, or Business
• CAANZ membership (or working towards it) preferred
• Minimum 2 years of experience in an accounting role
• Prior exposure to civil construction or project-based industries highly desirable
• Proficiency in MS Excel and MS Office
• Experience with ERP systems (preferably Nimbus) and Microsoft 365 tools
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills
• A high level of accuracy and attention to detail
• Resilience under pressure and strong time management
