About Us

Grounds and Services Limited (GSL) is a well-established privately owned company based in Hornby, who for over 27 years have been providing Grounds Maintenance, Civil Construction and Landscaping services in and around Canterbury.

Our Civil Construction Team is growing its project repertoire and capacity having established a reputation for successfully delivered projects for earthworks, drainage, roading, sports fields and the construction of stormwater treatment facilities, waterway enhancements and drainage improvements.

Our Open Spaces division offers a diverse range of services including roadside mowing, chemical spraying, pest plant control, landscaping, mass native planting and hydro seeding, as well as high amenity sports turf maintenance. We provide traffic management for NZTA and local authority contracts and roading maintenance through NZTA’s NOC maintenance contracts.

Our Mechanical Workshop extensively supports all areas of the business and external clients with services including the repair and maintenance of our vehicles and machinery, welding, and fabrication.

The Opportunity

Seeking an experienced Class 5 Driver Operator to work within our civil construction division based in Christchurch. No day is the same as we have a variety of work for you to get stuck into, such as transporting plant and equipment, moving materials across our GSL sites, loading and unloading spoil using a digger or simply operating our civil construction machinery. All the standard documentation will need to be filled out, such as Pre-Start Checks, daily job records (DJR), drivers’ logbooks and tally/load sheets, while ensuring all relevant safety protocols are followed.

Technical skills are great however cultural fit is equally as important. You will be joining a team which values flexibility and adaptability and the work ethic to work together as a team to get the job done. You’ll need to be physically fit and in general good health, willing to work away from the home base as required and be able to build a sound relationship with a small tight-knit team.

What You'll Bring

• Class 5 licence with WTR endorsements
• At least 3 years’ experience operating heavy trucks and trailers
• Proven experience using a range of machinery such as diggers, loaders, rollers, tractors
• Willingness to assist with general labouring when required
• Basic knowledge of the mechanics of heavy machinery and how to maintain it
• Knowledge of how to secure loads using load binders, chains and strops
• Strong understanding of transport and related industry laws, emergency procedures and how to handle hazardous conditions
