About Us

Grounds and Services Limited (GSL) is a privately owned company based in Hornby, Christchurch and has been providing Grounds Maintenance, Civil Construction and Landscaping services in and around Canterbury for the past 25 years.

Our Civil Construction Team is growing its project repertoire and capacity having established a reputation for successfully delivered projects for earthworks, drainage, roading, sports fields and the construction of stormwater treatment facilities, waterway enhancements and drainage improvements.

Our Open Spaces division offers a diverse range of services including roadside mowing, chemical spraying, pest plant control, landscaping, mass native planting and hydro seeding, as well as high amenity sports turf maintenance. We provide traffic management for NZTA and local authority contracts and roading maintenance through NZTA’s NOC maintenance contracts.

Our Mechanical Workshop extensively supports all areas of the business and external clients with services including the repair and maintenance of our vehicles and machinery, welding, and fabrication.

The Opportunity

Are you an experienced civil machinery operator looking for a wide variety of civil construction work? Due to an increased workload we are recruiting motivated and skilled operators to join our team. If you have experience operating machinery such as excavators, loaders, off-road dump trucks, bulldozers and skid steer loaders and other heavy machinery, and hold a Class 4 or 5 driver’s license, we want to hear from you!

Team and cultural fit are of as equal importance to your technical ability and experience. It is essential that you are flexible and adaptable to changes and have the strong ability to build a sound relationship with a tight-knit team.

About the Role
As a Civil Machinery Operator, you will be responsible for operating heavy machinery on civil construction sites across Christchurch and the Canterbury region. You’ll be working on various infrastructure projects, including subdivisions, stormwater basins and roading maintenance to name a few. Your role will involve ensuring the safe and efficient operation of machinery while adhering to all health and safety regulations. You’ll be part of a dynamic team focused on delivering high-quality results on time.

Key Responsibilities
• Operating machinery including excavators, loaders, moxys, rollers, etc.
• Conducting pre-start checks and ensuring equipment is maintained in good condition
• Following site plans and instructions from supervisors
• Adhering to all safety protocols and contributing to a safe worksite
• Collaborating with other team members to achieve project and site activities

What You'll Bring

To be successful in this role, just bring:
• Class 2 or 4 WTR driver’s license – essential for this role
• Experience operating civil construction machinery such as diggers, moxys, excavators, rollers
• A strong understanding of health and safety regulations on-site
• Ability to read and follow site plans and technical instructions
• Great communication skills and the ability to work well within a team
• Physically fit and capable of working in outdoor environments
