About Us

Grounds and Services Limited (GSL) is a privately owned company based in Hornby, Christchurch and has been providing Grounds Maintenance, Civil Construction and Landscaping services in and around Canterbury for the past 25 years.

We offer a range of services, including mowing services, hydro seeding, landscaping, sports turf maintenance, spraying, pest plant control and roading maintenance. Our Turf Management team maintain high profile sports turf facilities in the Canterbury region.

Our civil construction division specialises in earthwork construction especially in wetland areas. We have recently completed multiple land drainage projects for the Christchurch City Council in Wigram and Halswell.

Our extensive range of plant and equipment is supplemented by our transportation fleet to get the resources to where they need to go, and our large certified workshop ensures the fleet is regularly serviced and maintained.

The Opportunity

A new opportunity has become available to join our Open Space Maintenance Team as a Trainee Groundsperson. We are seeking those that share our love of the great outdoors, possess a can-do positive attitude and who take pride in their high standard of work for specific high profile amenity contracts.

As a Trainee, you will be reporting to the Turf & Irrigation Specialist and assist with the maintenance of high profile sports turf amenities according to specifications including a variety of tasks such as mowing, lawn maintenance, line marking, cylinder mowing, rotary mowing, using turf renovation equipment, cricket wicket preparation, fertilising, chemical application, and irrigating.

Ideally, you are currently enrolled in Level 2 or 3 Turf Qualifications or wanting to commence a Horticulture Turf Qualification. An experience with turf maintenance equipment and hand tools is preferred but full training will be provided.

You will be learning each day and would therefore need to be committed and have a strong motivation to undertake the necessary courses and trainings, have good listening skills and the ability to follow instructions, and passionate about working in the outdoors in a variety of weather conditions while properly utilising the PPE provided.

Self-motivation with the ability to work autonomously and as part of a team, is an important part of the role as well as having the ability to prioritise multiple demands, a willingness to be hands-on and carry out all tasks to get the job done.

What You'll Bring

Full NZ Driver Licence with the ability to drive manual gears essential
• Previous experience in a similar role is advantageous but not required
• Currently enrolled in Level 2 or 3 Turf Qualifications or wanting to commence Horticulture Turf Qualification
• Experience with turf maintenance equipment and hand tools preferred but full training will be given
