About Us

Grounds & Services Limited (GSL) is a proudly 100% New Zealand owned company operating from our Head Office in Hornby, Christchurch for the past 25 years. We have several divisions within GSL including Civil Construction, Open Spaces Management, Landscaping, and our Mechanical workshop.

Our Civil Construction division is growing its project repertoire and capacity having established a reputation for successfully delivering projects for earthworks, drainage, roading, pathways, concrete structures and the construction of stormwater treatment facilities, waterway enhancements and drainage improvements.
Our team recently finished building the Cashmere Valley Dam and have completed the Hoon Hay Basins, following on from other completed projects for Milns Wetland Cells, the Hoon Hay Siphon, Eastman Low Flow Channel, Milns Drain Realignment, and the Sparks Road and Halswell Downs Wetlands.

Our team combines decades of project management experience to deliver cost and time efficient methodologies that not only achieve outstanding results for our clients, but also culminate in excellent environmental performance as evidenced by wins at the CCNZ Environmental Awards in both 2019 and 2022.

All GSL divisions are supported by our in-house Traffic Management Services, an extensive Mechanical Workshop and access to our NZQA accredited Training Academy and Workplace Training that ensure we provide a comprehensive project solution with high-quality outcomes for our clients.

The Opportunity

Business is booming with plenty of forward work in the pipeline. As a Site Engineer working within our civil construction division based in Christchurch, you will be a natural leader who guides and motivates the site team to deliver a quality service to our clients on key projects in the Canterbury region.

You will combine your technical responsibilities with operations delivery, providing day to day direction to teams carrying out civil construction projects while bringing your practical hands-on experience having worked across earthworks, drainage, land development or similar fields. This includes ensuring project technical designs and plans are followed correctly with the ability to provide technical advice as required.

Your days will be busy as you plan and schedule workloads, facilitate Toolbox Talks, control and audit site quality and safety, manage resources and liaise with clients to the required contractual specifications, management plans and QA function reporting. You will also monitor financial elements such as procurement, productivity targets and contractor management.

You will play an important part in our large-scale earthwork projects and be passionate about your work that positively impacts the environment and the city you live in. What You'll Bring

- An industry qualification in civil construction, roading or earthworks (NZQA equivalent preferred)
- 3+ years practical site experience within NZ construction or civil infrastructure
- A Class 2 licence with W T R endorsements preferred
- Sound knowledge and operational experience with earthmoving machinery and associated small plant
- Strong leadership and influencing skills that build a positive work environment
- Ability to assess conflicting priorities and determine the most cost-effective solution
